What is the difference between atmega8 and atmega8l

I read that the ATmega8L should should have a lower max frequency, 8mhz, but it somehow works, while the ATmega8 - 16PU, having a max of 16mhz, doesn't. Can anyone point out the exact differences between the two? If you know what's wrong I would love the help.

That's about it. The L version can work at a lower voltage but with a lower clock. It's all there in the 1st page of the datasheet.

Yes L version works with broader voltage range 2. The other thing that is a direct consequence from the voltages is the brown-out detector, an L-version has one for both ranges 3V or 5V , while non-L version has only the 5V BOD it may have both but if 3V BOD just does not work so it is labeled as 5V only device.

The fact that 8MHz chip works at 10MHz is not a miracle, but it is just out of specification and does not have to work. On the other hand the mega8's may have come from a nice Chinese gentleman on eBay.
