Eustatius Historical Foundation Museum. Eustatius helps to protect nature and the marine life. The St. Eustatius National Parks Foundation, known locally as Stenapa is responsible for helping to promote ecotourism and the appreciation of visiting such a beautifully natural island. Stenapa oversees the National Parks including The Quill is a dormant volcano with a tropical rainforest and the Boven Subsector which is an extinct volcano on the north end of the island.
Eustatius Marine Park that opened in The formation of the Marine Park helps preserve the underwater nature. The seas around Statia are considered amongst the most pristine in the world. The Marine Park covers the sea floor and the waters from the high water mark down to the meter ft. Locally referred to as Statia , Sint Eustatius is approximately 10 km in length and has a maximum width of about 5 km.
The island features two extinct volcanoes separated by a flat central plain. Mount Mazinga, colloquially known as the Quill is a m stratovolcano located in the southeastern part of the island.
Sint Eustatius experiences a tropical monsoon climate. Hurricanes and tropical storms are quite frequent and the island receives about 1, mm of annual rainfall, mostly during the Atlantic hurricane season from June to November. The eastern part of the island is covered by low vegetation, whereas thick banana groves, breadfruit trees, and tall palms are found in the western part.
Several deciduous trees and thorny bushes are also found in various parts of the island. Upper Town is residential and where most businesses and governmental activities take place. Lower Town is where the harbor is located as well as several restaurants, hotels and the local nature preservation organization St. Unlike many Caribbean islands, St. Eustatius does not have miles of white sandy beaches. This has protected it from mass tourism. It is a sought-after tourism destination for avid divers looking for shipwrecks to explore and has one of the most spectacular underwater marine parks in the world.
The island is dripping with history and has many active dig sites. Archeologists and history buffs alike will find ruins all over the island which invite one to fantasize about the rich history of this unique island.
